Co-Axial Escapement
George Daniels patented the co-axial escapement in 1980 after concluding that the lateral lever escapement - used in nearly every mechanical watch since the 19th century - was fundamentally limited by the high sliding friction between its escape wheel teeth and pallet stones. His design separates the locking and impulse functions across two coaxially mounted wheels, replacing sliding contact with radial impulse.
Adoption by Omega
Daniels licensed the design to Omega, which introduced it commercially in the De Ville reference 4750 (1999) using a modified Calibre 2500 (a Frédéric Piguet 1120 base). Omega's in-house Calibre 8500 (2007) was the first ground-up movement designed around the escapement; it forms the basis of the Master Co-Axial 8800/8900 family used across the modern Seamaster and Aqua Terra ranges.
Practical implications
Lower sliding friction reduces lubricant degradation, which is the dominant cause of long-term rate drift in mechanical watches. Omega's Master Chronometer specification uses the co-axial escapement together with a silicon balance spring and anti-magnetic certification (15,000 gauss) to underwrite a five-year service interval.
