Movement Types

A watch movement (calibre) is the engine that measures and displays time. Construction differs fundamentally between mechanical movements, which derive energy from a wound mainspring, and quartz movements, which derive energy from a battery exciting a quartz crystal at 32,768 Hz.

Manual-wind mechanical

Energy is stored by hand-winding the crown. Calibres are typically thinner than automatics (no rotor) and are favoured in dress watches and observation chronographs. Examples: Patek Philippe CH 29-535 PS, Lange L951.6, Omega 321.

Automatic (self-winding)

A pivoting rotor, driven by wrist motion, winds the mainspring. Patented by Abraham-Louis Perrelet in 1777 for pocket watches and adapted to the wrist by John Harwood in 1923. Modern reference movements: Rolex 3235, ETA 2892-A2, Sellita SW200, Miyota 9015.

Quartz

Introduced commercially by Seiko on 25 December 1969 with the Astron 35 SQ. A battery sends current through a quartz crystal cut to oscillate at 32,768 Hz; integrated circuitry steps the frequency down to drive a stepper motor once per second. Standard accuracy: ±15 seconds per month; high-accuracy quartz (Citizen Chronomaster, Grand Seiko 9F) reaches ±5–10 seconds per year.
