The Quartz Question

Forty-five years after the 'Quartz Crisis,' it is worth asking what the crisis was actually about - and what the answer means now.

The shorthand history says that quartz nearly killed Swiss watchmaking, then mechanical watches came back as luxury objects. The longer history is more interesting and explains more about the watches sold today.

What actually happened, briefly

On 25 December 1969, Seiko released the Astron - the first commercial quartz wristwatch - in Tokyo, priced at 450,000 yen, roughly the cost of a small car. It was accurate to about ±5 seconds per month, an order of magnitude better than any mechanical watch of the period.

Within five years the price of quartz movements had collapsed by roughly 90% as Japanese and American manufacturers scaled production. By 1978 quartz watches outsold mechanical watches globally for the first time. The Swiss watch industry - which had employed around 90,000 people in 1970 - had lost roughly two-thirds of those jobs by 1983.

The recovery is usually credited to the founding of Swatch Group (then SMH) in 1983 and the launch of the inexpensive plastic Swatch watch the same year, which gave the Swiss industry a high-volume, low-margin product to defend its industrial base. In parallel, the surviving high-end manufacturers - Patek Philippe, Audemars Piguet, Vacheron Constantin, Rolex - repositioned the mechanical watch as a luxury object rather than a precision instrument.

What the crisis was actually about

The conventional story frames quartz as a technology that beat mechanical watches on accuracy. This is true but incomplete. The real disruption was that quartz movements were cheap to manufacture at scale, while a mechanical movement of any complexity required hundreds of hand-finished components.

A 1975 Seiko quartz module cost a few dollars to make. A 1975 Swiss mechanical movement of equivalent functionality cost twenty to forty times as much before it was even cased. Once consumers accepted that 'a watch tells the time' was a solved problem, the price differential could not be justified by accuracy alone.

The Swiss response was, in effect, to change the question. A mechanical watch was no longer offered as a precision instrument; it was offered as a piece of mechanical art that happened to also tell the time. That repositioning is the real legacy of the crisis, and it is why a contemporary high-end mechanical watch is photographed from the back as often as the front.

What quartz never gave up

It is sometimes assumed that high-end watchmaking abandoned quartz entirely after the 1980s. It did not. F.P. Journe's Élégante line uses a proprietary quartz movement with a 8-to-18-year battery life and a motion sensor that switches the hands off when the watch is stationary. Grand Seiko's 9F-series quartz movements are hand-assembled and adjusted to ±10 seconds per year - better than any mechanical watch.

These movements exist because quartz is genuinely the better technology for what a quartz watch is supposed to do, which is keep time accurately for very long periods with minimal intervention. The reason mechanical watches still exist at the high end is not that they are better at this; it is that they are doing something else - recording time as a continuously running mechanical process visible to the wearer.

Why this matters for buyers now

If accuracy and convenience are the priority, a quartz watch - at any price point from a Casio F-91W to a Grand Seiko 9F - is the rational choice. A smartwatch is even more rational. The mechanical watch is a deliberate choice in favour of a less convenient, less accurate object whose appeal is the mechanism itself.

This is not a sentimental position. It is the same logic that makes someone choose a fountain pen over a ballpoint, or a film camera over a phone: the limitation is part of the experience, and the experience is what is being purchased.

Understanding this is what separates a useful conversation about watches from an unprofitable one. The Quartz Crisis did not destroy mechanical watchmaking; it forced mechanical watchmaking to be honest about what it was selling. Forty-five years on, that honesty is the foundation of the entire luxury sector.
