Case Materials
Material choice influences a watch's weight, scratch resistance, hypoallergenic behaviour, thermal feel and long-term appearance. Modern luxury watchmaking has moved well beyond steel and gold into proprietary alloys and ceramics.
Stainless steel
316L surgical steel is industry standard. Rolex uses 904L (marketed as Oystersteel) since 1985 in Sea-Dwellers and across the line by 2003 - denser, harder to machine, and slightly more corrosion-resistant in chlorinated environments.
Gold and platinum
Standard yellow gold is 18k (75% gold). Rose/Everose contains a higher copper proportion stabilised against fade. White gold uses palladium or nickel as the bleaching alloy. Platinum 950 (95% pure) is denser than gold and has the highest scratch-mark visibility - patina collectors prize this.
Titanium and ceramic
Grade 2 titanium is used for lightweight tool watches; grade 5 (Ti-6Al-4V) is harder and accepts polishing. Ceramic (zirconia) is virtually unscratchable but brittle on impact - Rado pioneered its watch use in 1986; IWC and Omega now produce full ceramic cases.
