Ceramic Bezels and Cases
Rado pioneered scratch-resistant ceramic in the Integral (1986); IWC produced the first all-ceramic case in the Da Vinci (1986). Modern luxury ceramic - yttrium-stabilised zirconium-oxide for black, alumina-based formulations for white and colours - measures 1,200–1,400 on the Vickers hardness scale, roughly six times harder than stainless steel.
Why ceramic for bezels
Bezels are a watch's most exposed surface. Aluminium inserts (the original Submariner spec) abrade and fade; ceramic does neither. Rolex's Cerachrom (2005) uses platinum or gold PVD deposition into etched recesses to render the engraved numerals - a process that contributed to the supply constraints around the GMT-Master II 'Batman' and 'Pepsi' references.
Trade-offs
Ceramic is hard but brittle. A sharp impact on a corner can fracture the material, and once chipped it cannot be polished out. Modern formulations (Hublot's Magic Gold ceramic-metal composite, IWC's Ceratanium) attempt to combine ceramic surface hardness with metallic ductility.
